太田雄貴選手の北京オリンピックの銀メダルで一躍日本でも有名になったスポーツ、フェンシング。さまざまなスポーツのオリンピック代表選手の選考方法がオリンピックに近くなると話題になりますが、フェンシングの場合は、出場資格と選考方法はどのようなものになっているのか調べてみました。
フェンシングとは
2008年北京オリンピックでの銀メダルと、2012年ロンドンオリンピックでの男子フルーレ団体での日本の銀メダル。フェンシングといえば、印象に強いのは前述した2つかと思います。
日本ではあまりメジャーではないフェンシングというスポーツですが、ヨーロッパでの歴史は古く、中世の騎士たちの剣術が原形とされています。
フェンシングには、フルーレ、エペ、サーブルという3種類の武器があります。これは種目名としてそのまま呼ばれています。突きで胴体部分を攻撃することのみが有効とされるフルーレ、伝統的な決闘用の武器に最も近く、突きを有効とするには力が必要なエペ、突き以外にも斬りが有効とされるサーブルと、それぞれに特色があります。
オリンピックでのフェンシングの種目
リオデジャネイロオリンピックでは、フルーレは男女個人と女子団体、エペは男女個人と男女団体、フルーレは男女個人と男子団体が競技として行われます。
オリンピック開催都市によって、団体種目として選ばれるものが異なり、ロンドンオリンピックでは、エペの男子団体とサーブルの女子団体が行われませんでした。北京オリンピックでは、フルーレの男子団体とサーブルの女子団体が行われず、フェンシングは、個人男女6種目と、団体男女4種目の計10種目で行われることが多くなっています。
フェンシング団体の選考方法
リオデジャネイロオリンピックでは、フェンシングの団体種目の出場条件は、世界ランキングで4位以内、または大陸別ランキングで最上位になることでした。
ランキングを決定づける世界選手権やワールドカップでの選考により、出場国が決定されます。団体での出場が決定した場合は、同じ種目に個人で出場することができ、団体で出場できない場合は各種目1人の出場となるため、団体で出場できるということは、かなり大きなものとなります。
フェンシング個人の選考方法
個人種目での出場条件は、団体種目として採用されているか否かによって異なります。
リオデジャネイロオリンピックでは、団体種目として採用されているものの場合は、大陸別の世界ランキングで2位以内か、大陸別での予選で優勝した選手となります。いずれも、団体での出場が決定している選手は除きます。
団体種目でない種目の場合は、世界ランキングで14位以内、大陸別の世界ランキングで2位以内、大陸別の予選で3位以内に入ることが出場条件となっています。
